As anybody who has ever visited a dentist’s surgery will know, the modern dentist uses an astonishing array of sophisticated equipment, from the microscale handheld instruments to the X-ray machine, and ultimately to the dentist’s chair itself.

Much of the equipment used by a dentist has a relatively short life span, and must be replaced fairly frequently. In order to reduce the cost burden of replacing old or unreliable equipment, many dentists choose to purchase second hand equipment that has been refurbished and restored to the manufacturer’s original specification. For reasons of hygiene, all second-hand dentistry equipment must be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized before it can be reused, usually by either chemical or enzymatic methods, or through heat treatment, and then repaired and restored. The dentist chair itself is one of the most expensive pieces of equipment in a dentist’s surgery, and this can be renovated by replacing all padding and cushions, inspecting the mechanism and replacing or repairing parts that no longer function correctly.
